Steps for Obtaining a Replacement Medicare Card

Getting a Replacement Medicare Card: A Simple Guide

If you’ve lost your Medicare card or need a new one, you might be wondering about the process to get it replaced. Here’s a straightforward guide to help you understand and apply for a new Medicare card.

Understanding Your Medicare Card

When you join Medicare, you’ll get a red, white, and blue card. This card, mailed with your welcome packet, includes:

  • A unique Medicare number (different from your Social Security number)
  • Your Medicare Parts (like Part A, Part B, or both)
  • Coverage start dates

Note: Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) beneficiaries will have a card with the RRB symbol and “Railroad Retirement Board” on it.

Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement Insurance Cards

If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you won’t use your Medicare card for services; instead, you’ll use your plan’s card. Keep your Medicare card safe, though, in case you switch back to Original Medicare or a different plan later. Similarly, those with Medicare Supplement Insurance will use their supplemental plan’s card for benefits.

When to Get a New Medicare Card

You might need a new card if:

  • It’s lost, stolen, or damaged
  • You’ve changed your name (Note: Your card name matches your Social Security card. Update your Social Security card for name changes.)

Keeping Your Medicare Card and Number Safe

Treat your Medicare card and number like a credit card. Only share this information with trusted healthcare providers, insurance companies, or verified Medicare representatives. Be wary of unsolicited calls asking for your Medicare details. If you suspect a scam, hang up and call 1-800-MEDICARE.

Replacing Your Medicare Card

To replace your card:

  1. Log into your “my Social Security” account. (Create one if you don’t have it.)
  2. Go to the “Medicare Enrollment Detail” section.
  3. Click on “Medicare Replacement Card.”
  4. Select “Mail My Replacement Card.”

Your new card should arrive at your registered address within about 30 days. Ensure your mailing address is updated in your Social Security account.

Using Your Medicare Card

Carry your Medicare card to access medical services. For Medicare Advantage plan members, remember to carry your specific health insurance card.

Lost Card? Find Your Number

If you’ve misplaced your card, simply log into MyMedicare.gov to view your number or print a copy of your card.

Why Protect Your Medicare Card?

Your Medicare card could be targeted for medical fraud, where someone uses your card number to get medical care, prescriptions, or file claims. Keep it secure to prevent such fraud.
